What good is apologetics? If I were to tell you that apologetics has benefits for the believer what would you think? Some think that apologetics is about arguing people into the Kingdom of God. Others think that it just about proving one’s point that Christianity is true. There are a plethora of other bad reasons that people have for not seeing apologetics as a viable and valuable spiritual discipline.
What I would like to do is make a series of posts on the benefits of apologetics when it comes to key arenas of the Christian faith. What do you mean benefits? This is why I am sharing this post by providing for you, four benefits that apologetics provides for the believer in Christ.
- It prompts a deeper discussion between Christians. Simply stated, apologetics topics drive deep discussion among thinking believers. Every believer is commanded to love the Lord with all their mind and not just their heart and soul Imagine two believers over coffee or lunch in a discussion on ways to communicate to a skeptic a common topic that will grow them deeper in their faith. It happens with me and a buddy or my pastor. Imagine that things starts to change the shallow habits of some Christian circles when the conversations go deep.
- It eases tension between Christians with different views. This benefit is a two edged sword. First, when we understand that there is an array of views Christians can reasonably hold, one can become more open to accepting a Christian who is not strong in their faith, and may hold a different view on a specific topic. This is because Jesus Christ unifies us, as we stand together on the truth of this Word and have an understanding that every human being is created in the image of God.The flipside of this benefit has a caveat to it. There is a lot of error creeping into the church that apologists need to lovingly reprove and show the error that is deceiving believers and coming up against the knowledge of God (2 Corinthians 10:3-5).
- It unifies people from various Christian denominations. Apologetics knows no denominational barriers. The defense of God’s existence and the evidence behind Jesus’ life and resurrection crosses all Christian denominations – no Christian is excluded from the “apologetics army” when it comes to defending the cardinal tenets of the historical Christian faith.
- It provides opportunities to encourage other Christians. There is are a lot of young believers in our post truth culture being bombarded with objections that often create doubts. We need a community of Christians who can come together and ask tough questions, hash through the answers, and encourage each other to use what they’ve learned in our daily walks. This kind of encouragement happens all the time in podcasts like Stand to Reason, Cross Examined, Cold Case Christianity; and let’s not forget The Real Issue Podcast along with others.
There you have it, four benefits of apologetics for believers. Let us know what you think. and if you have any questions on what you have read here. We would love to dialogue with you.
