“I cannot do apologetics.” “I don’t know how to get started!” I hear these things a lot from well-meaning Christians whenever the subject comes up. If you look all throughout Scripture, the Bible calls us to live the life we defend (1 Peter 3:15-17; 2 Corinthians 10:3-6; Colossians 4:5,6).
But as our culture becomes more and more skeptical, we need to remember that the Bible commands apologetics, reason demands it (Isaiah 1:18). There are plenty of resources available. However if you need some ideas, with the assistance of the good folks at Apologetics315, here is a list of ways that you can get started.
1. Give to an apologetics ministry As “$1 apologists” we are the “boots on the ground” for the church in today’s post Christian culture, to come alongside help equip and encourage the church.
2. Get books into the hands of the right people (Love Your God with All Your Mind )
3. Organize apologetics conferences
4. Comment on blogs
5. Start your own blog (Blogger, WordPress)
6. Give people CDs and MP3s to listen to
7. Show a DVD or movie at your church or home
8. Start a Reasonable Faith Group (or small group to discuss crucial issues on faith and culture)
9. Get a certificate (Biola, Cross Examined Instructor Academy)
10. Get a degree (Biola, SES, and more)
11. Start a Sunday school class
12. Do youth group apologetics mission trips (like Jim Wallace here)
13. Do talks at schools
14. Start a podcast
15. Write letters to the editor
16. Do book reviews on Amazon from a Christian perspective
17. Go through a good curriculum (Perhaps the ABC curriculum or Tactics for home, church, or youth group). Ask about other resources or go to my Links page to find more.
18. Encourage your pastor to preach apologetically
19. Use apologetics bulletin inserts weekly (PCM has some good ones)
20. Still don’t think you can get in the game? Think of what you know and love about your Christian faith (e.g., the existence of God; the resurrection of Christ; the authenticity of the Bible; Jesus; the Trinity, etc (you get the idea). Learn as much as you can on the subject and then teach it, share it, communicate it, blog on it, find a way to share it with other.
Can you think of anything else? Why not sit down and brainstorm your own ideas for doing apologetics. Please add your ideas below in the comments and then Tweet (icon below) this post.
