Error in the Church? Yes

Welcome to my “Watchman on the Wall” page. I want you to know that I love the church. I also believe that apologetics is needed more than ever in the church. One of those facets of apologetics is refuting error in the church (as you can see in the graphic in the right margin).

As Christians, we read Scripture passages that command us to be on our guard (Acts 20:28; 2 Timothy 4:15; 2 Peter 3:17). We are also told to hold fast to sound doctrine (1 Timothy 4:6; 6:3; 2 Timothy 4:3; and Titus 1:9; 2:1). And Scripture is clear about the warnings of embracing the teachings coming from false teachers and embracing or toying with false doctrine (Acts 20:28-30; 2 Peter 2:1-3; c.f. 1 Timothy 4:1,2; 2 Thessalonians 2:11,12; 2 Timothy 4:3,4). Lastly, we have the most important warnings come from the words of Jesus in Matthew 24:4-8 (c.f. Mark 13:5-8; Luke 21:8-12); and the Apostle Peter (2 Peter 2:1-3).

So why are we cuddling up to things like the latest Christian music from ministries known to have false teachers?

Today we are witnessing what I believe to be an apostasy right in the church. Poorly discipled believers are embracing heretical movements that are gaining footholds (through the music and books) in many churches, and maybe even your church.

Theological liberalism, the Prosperity gospel, and the Emergent church, have all gained footholds over the last several years. But today, we have new trojan horses getting past the gatekeepers of the church (pastors and ministerial staff):

Theological liberalism
Seeker sensitive movements with a weak gospel
Neo Orthodoxy
The Prosperity Gospel (aka Word Faith Theology)
Contemplative or centering prayer (Lectio divina),
the New Apostolic Reformation,
the Emergent Church,
Progressive Christianity,
Futurism/Transhumanism,
New Age practices,
Occultism (enneagrams, angel cards, etc),
the Purpose driven movement,
spiritual formation,
and yoga.

All of the above (and more) are getting past the gatekeepers of the church, and showing how much of a lack of discernment many in the church have.

Spirit of Error.org – The website by Holly Pivec who the former managing editor of Biola University’s magazine, Biola Magazine, and a former contributing writer to the Christian Research Journal.  Her website alerts believers on the movement New Apostolic Reformation (NAR)

Christian Answers for the New Age (CANA)– Are you exploring different paths that claim to lead to truth or to holistic spirituality? Or maybe you are wondering about the supernatural. If you are exploring or just mildly curious, please check out the information on this site. Be open to it and see for yourself what is here. Don’t let any preconceived ideas be a barrier. Your exploration may lead to something interesting. To read her story, click on “Marcia’s Story.”

Midwest Christian Outreach – mission of Midwest Christian Outreach is to give clear answers, and a solid defense of the orthodox biblical faith, to all types of unbelievers — atheists, agnostics, as well as members of cults and new religious groups such as the Jehovah’s Witnesses, Mormons, the International Churches of Christ, and so on.

Berean Ministries White Papers on Social Justice Christianity – Do not be fooled by professing Christians who prefer either “progressive Christian” or “social justice Christian” to evangelical. It matters not what trendy terms people use to describe themselves, a progressive by any other name is still a liberal. So it should not come as a surprise to learn that some PC’s are avowed Marxists.

Good Fight Ministries – A ministry that equips Christians with biblical Truth, exposes the unfruitful works of darkness (Ephesians 5:11), and maintains a heart to win souls with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Good Fight Ministries specializes in apologetics, discernment, theology, Bible prophecy, end times, and exposing the enemy’s tactics within pop culture and the entertainment industry which lead people away from the biblical God of the Bible.

Old Path Theology – To understand the mission behind Old Path Theology, you have to understand the mission of Calvary Old Path where Pastor Chris Quintana was senior pastor for 10 years and saw it through many changes within Calvary Chapels.

On Solid Rock Resources – OSR is a Christian discernment site to help those who wish to research current trends in the Church, Christian teachers, the cults, abortion, creation-evolution debate, heresy, occult practices, social justice, spiritual warfare, yoga, and much more. In order to become discerning, you must have good information at your fingertips and the time and patience to do the necessary research. The goal for every Christian is to eliminate aberrant and heretical teaching and all that this includes form Christ’s church. The only way for this to happen is for each of us to become a Berean.
