Welcome to my “Watchman on the Wall” page. I want you to know that I love the church. I also believe that apologetics is needed more than ever in the church. One of those facets of apologetics is refuting error in the church (as you can see in the graphic in the right margin).
As Christians, we read Scripture passages that command us to be on our guard (Acts 20:28; 2 Timothy 4:15; 2 Peter 3:17). We are also told to hold fast to sound doctrine (1 Timothy 4:6; 6:3; 2 Timothy 4:3; and Titus 1:9; 2:1). And Scripture is clear about the warnings of embracing the teachings coming from false teachers and embracing or toying with false doctrine (Acts 20:28-30; 2 Peter 2:1-3; c.f. 1 Timothy 4:1,2; 2 Thessalonians 2:11,12; 2 Timothy 4:3,4). Lastly, we have the most important warnings come from the words of Jesus in Matthew 24:4-8 (c.f. Mark 13:5-8; Luke 21:8-12); and the Apostle Peter (2 Peter 2:1-3).
So why are we cuddling up to things like the latest Christian music from ministries known to have false teachers?
Today we are witnessing what I believe to be an apostasy right in the church. Poorly discipled believers are embracing heretical movements that are gaining footholds (through the music and books) in many churches, and maybe even your church.
Theological liberalism, the Prosperity gospel, and the Emergent church, have all gained footholds over the last several years. But today, we have new trojan horses getting past the gatekeepers of the church (pastors and ministerial staff):
Theological liberalism
Seeker sensitive movements with a weak gospel
Neo Orthodoxy
The Prosperity Gospel (aka Word Faith Theology)
Contemplative or centering prayer (Lectio divina),
the New Apostolic Reformation,
the Emergent Church,
Progressive Christianity,
Futurism/Transhumanism,
New Age practices,
Occultism (enneagrams, angel cards, etc),
the Purpose driven movement,
spiritual formation,
and yoga.
All of the above (and more) are getting past the gatekeepers of the church, and showing how much of a lack of discernment many in the church have.
